A dental home visit usually begins with an examination and a discussion of the patient's needs. Where suitable, the dentist may use mobile dental equipment, including X-rays, to support assessment and treatment planning.

The initial visits are always an examination and x-rays. This is because the dentist needs to assess the patient first, see how he can help, and give all possible options. During that visit, the dentist can prescribe antibiotics if necessary and will provide a cost estimate and treatment plan, as well as a thorough risk assessment tailored to each patient's medical condition, age, and medication (if necessary) later.
